COPY-Lawyer for Larry Craig says ethics investigation goes against precedent

Associated Press - September 5, 2007 9:23 AM ET

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - 1 of Larry Craig's lawyers says his team should seek to have the Senate dismiss the ethics investigation into the senator's sex sting scandal.

Washington attorney Stan Brand tells NBC's "Today" show that an unbroken line of precedents makes it clear the Senate doesn't look into misdemeanor private conduct. He says Republicans prejudged the senator's case before anyone knew anything.

A spokesman for Craig says he still may fight for his Senate seat if the lawmaker can clear his name with the Senate ethics panel and a Minnesota court.

Senior GOP Senator Arlen Specter says colleagues who pressured Craig to resign should re-examine the facts surrounding his case. He says he believes Craig would've been exonerated if he hadn't pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and instead demanded a trial.
