COPY-Ex-sheriff Jenne pleads guilty to tax, fraud charges

Associated Press - September 5, 2007 3:54 PM ET

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Former Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne has pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion and mail fraud conspiracy charges.

Jenne said little during today's plea hearing. Outside the courthouse, Jenne said today was "the worst day" of his life and offered an apology for what he called "personal mistakes."

Sentencing is scheduled for November 16th. The plea agreement with prosecutors calls for a sentence of between 18 and 24 months in federal prison, but the judge has final say.

Jenne will remain free on bond until the sentencing date. He resigned yesterday as sheriff after a 9-year tenure. His attorney says Jenne hopes to find some form of employment.

Jenne must also pay back taxes and could face additional fines and penalties.

Jenne pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud conspiracy and three counts of tax evasion involving more than $80,000 in alleged hidden payments and financial favors.
