COPY-Police shoot machete-wielding man who charged at officers

Associated Press - September 6, 2007 4:44 PM ET

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man wielding a machete at West Palm Beach officers.

Meanwhile, officer Raymond Spinosa is on paid administrative leave.

A police spokesman says two officers responded to a 911 call last night that a shirtless man with a machete was walking down a street near a park.

When the officers arrived, Vladimir Niellas refused to put down the knife and charged at them. Spinosa shot the man at least twice, killing him.

Initially, officers with stun guns were sought to respond to the scene. But the spokesman says the first two to arrive did not have Tasers, adding that it wouldn't have mattered.
