COPY-Fire causes part of apartment building roof to collapse in Fla.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) - It appears no one was killed in the fire that tore apart a large section of a three-story apartment building in Deerfield Beach.

Dazed residents are milling about the structure's partially collapsed roof and severely damaged remains.

Meanwhile, firefighters are sweeping through the charred rubble in the building, picking up burnt wood and debris, but no bodies have been found. Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue spokesman Gary Fernaays says about five to eight people had minor injuries such as smoke inhalation.

An explosion sparked the fire at about 5:30 a.m., but its cause is not clear. Fernaays says there are propane tanks in the building and a natural gas line runs under a nearby road.

The blaze is out now, but officials say the building is structurally unsafe.

9-year-old Frances Boucharune says she was sleeping when her mother woke her up to alert her to the fire. She says the roof fell on her mom, who had dried blood caked on her left arm.
