COPY-Explosion tears apart apartment building in Fla.; 10 injured

Associated Press - September 20, 2007 12:04 PM ET

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say propane gas likely caused an explosion and fire that tore apart a large section of a three-story apartment building in Deerfield Beach.

At least ten people were injured in the morning fire. Firefighters continue to search for potential victims through charred rubble, turning over burnt wood and debris.

Fire Rescue spokesman Gary Fernaays says an engineer will determine whether the structural damage was severe enough to stop firefighters from doing a larger sweep with cadaver dogs. Firefighters also need to be cautious because of propane tanks in the building.

Authorities say all the victims' injuries appear to be minor.

Up to 150 residents were in the building when the explosion sparked the fire around 5:30 a.m. The blaze was quickly put out.
