FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says it plans to eliminate a Fort Lauderdale anchorage. The closure should help protect coral reefs.
The ships have used the anchorage to wait for a berth in Port Everglades, but about a dozen vessels have grounded on the reefs since 1994.
The Coast Guard says it will close the anchorage site in shallow water nearest to the shore and will expand use in another area located in deeper water.
