Hit and run driver sentenced

The hit-and-run driver who severely injured a child walking to school is heading to prison for two and a half years.

Kelly Fleming hit 11-year old Alexis Blackmore earlier in the school year as she was walking to a bus stop in Port St. Lucie.  Alexis was very badly hurt.  She is now confined to a wheel-chair.

After police tracked down Fleming, he told them he thought he hit a mail-box. "I told the policeman what happened, and he told me I did not hit a mailbox, I hit a child," he told the Judge in court yesterday.  He went on to apologize to the girl's mother, saying, "I hope she is okay, in God's name."

Fleming was linked to the crime when police found fibers from Alexis' book bag embedded in the glass of his shattered windshield.
