Near drowning during party at Lake Worth pool

An 11-year-old girl fights to survive after nearly drowning in a community pool.

About a dozen children were swimming in the pool during a birthday party. But, at first, when the girl slipped underneath the water, no one noticed.

It happened at Smith's Farm on Hypoluxo in Lake Worth. She was reported to be in critical condition Sunday night at Palms West Hospital. But we're told she is improving.

Now, the question on everyone's mind is how she ended up at the bottom of the pool.

PBSO deputies say the girl was at a birthday party and about eight kids were in the community pool at the time. "It's open, so you can see everything," says one witness.

But investigators say, sometime during the party, someone didn't see the girl sink in the water.

Witnesses say when an adult finally noticed her, she was on the bottom of the five-foot pool. He quickly pulled her out and started CPR.

Paramedics arrived a short time later and took over. They quickly rushed her to JFK Medical Center in critical condition.

Neighbors say, although this is the first time they've heard of a problem at the pool, they plan to keep a closer eye on their kids.

The girl's parents were not at the party.

Sheriff's deputies say there were surveillance cameras at the pool. But that there wasn't a clear shot of the girl going under the water.
