WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Update, WED 9:30 AM: An 8-year-old boy is left behind while his parents run out of the house to escape an armed gunmen. It happened on Gun Club Road near West Palm Beach.

"I didn't want to leave. I couldn't leave him there," said the boy's mother, Kellin Hahn. But Hahn tells Fox 29 she and Kevin Dummett crawled out of a bathroom window during the home invasion leaving their son alone.

Dummett says the two armed men first approached him just after midnight as he was working on his car in the driveway. He claims they forced him into the house, robbed them of cash and prescription painkillers, and then took off.

But the couple didn't report the first break in. "I had no description. I couldn't see what they looked like. I still don't know what they look like," said Kevin Dummett.

The couple told investigators the men returned six hours later, burst through the back of the house, and shot their dog to death.

Fox 29 asked them why they didn't try to grab the boy from his bedroom before escaping themselves. "They had no reason to go in there. I knew they wouldn't go in there. I felt confident leaving him there knowing that all they wanted was what they came for," responds Dummett.

"I can't imagine why someone would want to hurt an 8-year-old child. I just prayed. I just prayed," said Hahn

According to investigators, the intruders ran away right after shooting the dog. Deputies arrived soon after the gunfire to find the boy unharmed.

Dummett says he's never seen the men before. But he admits to a criminal record including battery and car theft that goes back 10 years. "I used to do the same thing. I used to do similar things. I hurt people, and it came back on me," says Dummett.

The boy is back in his parents care. Investigators are now looking for information that will lead them to the intruders.

The couple describes them as two young men possibly in their early 20s. One was armed with a shot gun; the other with a hand gun.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Previously: This is a terrifying morning for the family who lived in a home on Gun Club Road. Detectives say shortly after 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, two men, both of them armed, broke into the back of the home. One was said to have a handgun and the other, a shotgun.

The two adults inside the home managed to get out okay, but they left their baby boy inside the home.

During this time, one of the gunmen shot the family dog.

Luckily, deputies managed to get the baby boy out of the home alive and okay. The search for the gunmen forced the shutdown of portions of Gun Club Road near Jog in West Palm Beach.

Detectives tell us there was a home invasion at this same home yesterday, but for some reason the homeowner never reported it to authorities like he should have.
