PBC only shelter meets another roadblock

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - They are known for housing the homeless about as much as they are known for fighting to do so.

But, now, Palm Beach County's only homeless shelter could be headed for battle - again.

"If the county fails to step up, we have no choice as a church," said Bishop Avis Hill of Westgate Tabernacle Church, the county's lone shelter for the homeless.

Hill says the church recently began seeing more people than usual seeking help - possibly due to an ailing economy. Seeing no choice, the church put up a 2,400 sq ft. tent to house an overflow population of the homeless.

A permit is needed to construct a tent of that size according to county code enforcement officials. Hill says Westgate does not have a permit.

"We have no choice as John Doe, John Q. Citizen, to help those that are hurting, so if the county has a better solution, I wish they would show me," Hill said.

The tent is housing men only. Women, children and the elderly are sleeping in the church sanctuary.

Code enforcement officials are expected to be at the church on Thursday to inspect the tent.
