WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Tough economic times are giving way to more calls on the suicide crisis line.

The operators of the 211 service say suicide calls are up 87 percent in Palm Beach County this year. Many are distraught about unemployment and the loss of their homes.

Broward County is experiencing a 112 percent increase in calls.

Randy Nicklaus, Suicide Hotline director, says "Sometimes allowing the person to talk about their problems, they learn that someone cares, they can talk it through and learn new ways to handle the situation. It's very helpful."

Perhaps the biggest help that can be given are referrals. Counselors have access to a database with up to 1,000 programs with financial to mental health evaluations.
