WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Police are searching for several suspects after someone apparently rammed the entrance of a local drug store with a heavy-duty truck, and then took off when they couldn't get inside.
The attempted robbery happened at the Walgreens store at Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Australian Avenue just before 4 am Tuesday. It appears that a passerby saw the crime in progress and called police. The store's alarm system never went off.
Police arrived on the scene to find a large green truck abandoned with its doors open. Several large posts blocking the entrance of the store had been toppled; the front metal gate was dented and the glass entry doors were spiderwebbed.
An ATM is at the front of the store, near the entrance. Police are trying to determine if the suspects were trying to get to the machine.
"This is a lot of damage for -- obviously -- nothing was accomplished out of this," said assistant store manager Marlon Andre, as he surveyed the damage. "That's the sad part of the stuff that's going on now. This stuff is happening. The thieves aren't really getting away with anything. It's just causing a lot of damage to the community."
Andre was able to partially open the store's front gate early Tuesday morning, but the heavy concrete and metal posts remained on the sidewalk out front. Other debris included shattered glass, broken concrete, and parts of the truck's tail light.
Authorities used police dogs to search the area for the suspects, but as of nearly 7 am, no arrests had been made.
