WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - It is possible for a female to get ready in less than 45 seconds. Of course, some special training and certification is necessary, but that's why the West Palm Beach Fire Department is here.

Captain John Ferguson, Palm Beach Fire Rescue, said, "We're putting on a little friendly competition for Clematis by Night. It's a competition for our firefighters to see how quickly they can get into their bunker gear."

It's Firefighter Night at Clematis by Night, a weekly event that, after 13 years, has become a West Palm Beach tradition.

Now, this competition is just for fun, but when a family in our community is in need of Iris and her team, all bets are off.

Iris Hernandez, Palm Beach Fire Rescue, "It's not just a slow walk to get in and take our time. It's a quick thing - minutes, seconds count."

It's now time for the West Palm Beach Fire Rescue to have some fun with the people they protect.

Rachel "So, next, we're going to pull two people from the audience, and have them do it, correct?"

Captain John Ferguson, Palm Beach Fire Rescue, "That's correct."

Our two lucky candidates are Erin and Jalin.

Both receive some training, and with the sound of the horn, they spring out of their cot. Erin was a head pretty much the whole time. But, she had some trouble with her helmet giving Jalin a chance to catch up.

It was a close race, but Jalin is declared the winner.

Yes, Clematis by Night is every week, and you can always count on great food, live music and trendy sidewalk shopping, but there's always a different theme for the night.

Mary Pinak, community events manager for West Palm Beach, said, "Right around the corner is our 'Clematis by Fright' which is October 30, the day before Halloween. Then, we have our holiday parade and tree lighting right around the corner from that on December 11, so we're just jammed packed with fun around here."

It's every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Centennial Square at the end of Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach. And, despite tough times, Clematis by Night remains free, so it's affordable for all walks of life.
