Fatal: 3-year-old boy shot in head

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A 3-year-old child is accidentally shot in the head with a pistol shortly before 9 p.m. Monday night. He died shortly after at the hospital.

Updated, TUE 11:45 AM: We now know that the child was playing alone in a bedroom when the gun went off. Police say the 3-year-old boy was playing in the bedroom with the aunt when she heard a noise and went outside. While she was outside, she heard a loud pop and went back to the house.

Police are considering it accidental self-inflicted. It is still not known whether the child lived there.

There are still no charges at this time.

Updated, TUE 9 AM: It happened Monday night on the 3800 block of Westview Avenue near Australian and 45th Street.

Police say the child was playing in a bedroom when his aunt heard a noise outside. She went to check it out. While, outside, she heard a loud pop from inside. When she came back inside, she found the little boy.

Bishop Thomas Masters, the Mayor of Riviera Beach, arrived at the home after the shooting to console the family. "The mother was crying and screaming, and I was trying to... I don't know what else to say."

The little boy died on the way to the hospital.

Previously: West Palm Beach Police said the shooting happened in the 3800 block of Westview Avenue and that the little boy was taken to St. Mary's Hospital.
