FT PIERCE, FL (WFLX) - The Saint Lucie County School district takes action against a Morningside Elementary School teacher who voted out a 5-year-old autistic boy out of class.

School board members decided to suspend Wendy Portillo without pay for one year.

Alex Barton's Morningside Elementary kindergarten classmates voted him out of class after Portillo demanded he leave for his disruptions, a symptom of his autism.

Alex's mother says, she should have been fired. "Wendy Portillo will have her dignity when they vote on her fate, but Alex still carries the scars of what she did to him."

Portillo is appealing with the state. Her lawyers say, she has a remarkable 14 year career with the district and doesn't deserve to be suspended.
