PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A new study out Friday indicates fewer students in Palm Beach County are turning to drugs and alcohol.

The Palm Beach County Substance Abuse Coalition released new statistics Friday indicating that the fewer students are using cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol across the area.

Officials surveyed students between the ages of 10 and 19. Here are some of the highlights:

Almost 93 percent of students say they do not smoke cigarettes.

  • The percentage of 7th to 12th graders reporting cigarette use is down to 7.2 percent in 2008 from a high of 18 percent back in 2002.
  • Alcohol remains the most widely used substance among teenagers. In Palm Beach County, 33.6 percent of students say they have had alcohol within the past 30 days.
  • Coalition members say that percentage is down about 3 percent since the year 2000.

Overall, officials say, they are encouraged by the results. Authorities are expected to release full numbers at a news conference later Friday.

The Palm Beach County Substance Abuse Coalition is comprised of more than 150 agencies that team up to fight drug and alcohol use among local teenagers and children.
