WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Pack some patience.

That's the word from post office officials as they brace for the busiest holiday mailing day of the year on Monday.

The United States Postal Service is expected to be flooded with letters, packages and more as workers handle 960 million pieces of mail on Monday alone.

"The West Palm Beach Processing and Distribution Center expects to cancel the largest volume [on Monday]," said JoAnn Goodrich with the United States Postal Service, "between 1.5 and 1.7 million cards and letters."

Authorities recommend customers get to postal centers early and learn the automated postal machines to save time.

In order to make sure your packages reach their destination by the Christmas holiday, priority mail customers are asked to get packages out by December 20 and express mail customers by December 23.

Officials also recommend the following to make sure your mail gets out safely and quickly:

  • Print addresses clearly.
  • Always use a return address.
  • Never guess a zip code. When in doubt, use
  • Don't use string, paper, masking tape, or cellophane tape to mail packages.
