Student drug testing

PALM BEACH COUNTY (WFLX) Some high school athletes in Palm Beach County may soon have to undergo drug and alcohol testing.

The Palm Beach County School Board preliminarily approved a policy Wednesday night that would require student athletes to submit to random testing.

If the measure gets final approval, the program would test this season's baseball and softball players at six local high schools.

It would detect the use of alcohol as well as prescription drugs. The testing does not detect the use of steroids. Money to fund the program would come from a federal grant. The school board makes its final decision next week. The nearly $198,000 three-year pilot program, funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, could eventually expand to more sports and all high schools.
