Mystery illness puzzles local doctor

By Juan Carlos Fanjul email

DELRAY BEACH-- In the last week or so, one Delray Beach doctor says he's seen an influx of patients complaining of the same flu-like symptoms.

Dr. James Byrnes says a third of the people coming in this week are suffering from head congestion, sore throat, Larengitis, and chest congestion.

He tells us this is the first time he's seen so many people coming in with the same symptoms.

Dr. Byrnes says he's not sure what the illness is, but he claims it's definitely a strain of the flu.

So what can you do to try and stay healthy?

"The biggest thing you can do for prevention is hand washing," said Dr. Byrnes.

If you think you're not going to get sick because you got a flu shot this year, think again. Dr. Byrnes says this particular strain of the flu is resistant to the vaccine.

There is some good news, however. He says most people he's seen don't need antibiotics and advises his patients to use over-the-counter medicine to find relief and rest up until they feel better.
