JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - The big top is going up at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. But no lions, tigers or bears will be seen. Instead, this circus tells the story of P.T. Barnum, America's greatest showman, as a musical.
And who better to show me a few of the tricks in the show than the ringmaster, Kevin Kraft?!
Every since Kevin was little, he wanted to be in the circus. And when Barnum came a calling, he answered in a big way. "I was actually a Ringling Brothers' Barnum and Bailey Circus clown many moons ago, and I have all these circus skills. And, then, I went to New York and became an actor. So when they were looking for actors with circus skills, I got an appointment and was lucky enough to be cast."
I don't think it was as much luck as it was talent that got Kevin the part. He plays nine different roles, makes 29 costume changes and knows all the tricks.
After some directions from Kevin, I was able to juggle scarves. But when it came to the ancient Chinese trick of spinning a plate on a stick, I needed some help.
Then, it was time to learn my favorite trick, the flying trapeze... Just kidding, I'll leave that to the cast!
Barnum runs through January 25 at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.
