Wendy Vaniglia knew from the moment her daughter, Candi, passed away that she was going to donate her organs. Candi, who was born with hydrocephalus, died from complications during a routine procedure to relieve the swelling on her brain.
"Nothing else could be done for her. It doesn't get any worse than death. It really gave us the ability to save a life," says Vaniglia.
That was 14 years ago. Now the Jupiter woman has made it her mission to save other lives through organ donation, and help families who make that difficult decision.
"My message is organ donation is good for the donor family. It's the one good thing that happens in a moment of tragedy," says Vaniglia.
Vaniglia has started a non-profit organization called The Gift of Candi. It's an organization that raises money for donor families who can't afford to pay for a funeral. Vaniglia also wants to create a national database where donor families can connect with the organ recipients.
The first Gift of Candi fundraiser is being held this weekend. The Ride for Life Poker Run is being held on Saturday, January 17th. Registration starts at 11am at the Harley-Davidson store on 45th Street in West Palm Beach. The run will end at the Tiki Waterfront Grill in Riviera Beach. FOX 29 10 o'clock anchor, Suzanne Boyd, will be emceeing the event.
