WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate Finance Committee chairman says he backs Tom Daschle's nomination to be Health and Human Services secretary. Daschle has been dogged by his failure to pay more than $120,000 in taxes, a recent revelation that could stall or derail his confirmation. His prospects got a significant boost Monday as Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, the Finance chairman, said in a written statement that he had faith in Daschle's dedication and qualifications. Baucus said pushing reform of the health care system is a major goal and Daschle would be an "invaluable and expert partner in this effort." Baucus said he was "eager to move forward together." Daschle is scheduled to meet with the committee in closed session Monday.
