Puppies thrown from car windows

FORT PIERCE, FL (WFLX) - On the cuteness scale it's tough to beat a puppy, but apparently that's not enough to stop someone from throwing them out of a moving car.

His name is Benji. A happy puppy with a sad story. The Humane Society of St. Lucie County's Operations Manager, David Robertson, says, "They were basically driving down the road. He came flying out the window, just thrown out the window."

Thrown out of a moving car one week ago. Then it was brought to the Humane Society by a good samaritan. Four days after Benji's demise, in walks another puppy. He had the same treatment: tossed out a car window on a rural road. Robertson says, "Very, very skinny and skittish. I think he came from a bit of a rough home."

Robertson, says this is now all too familiar, "We've seen an increase of animals coming in that have been related to the state of the economy. It may be fear of bringing it to the Humane Society."

The St. Lucie County Humane Society treats the animals until they get better. Nine months ago, seven puppies were thrown away like trash, now all in loving homes.

One of the puppies brought in last week is malnourished. Thankfully the helpful stranger got a license plate number.

The Humane Society urges everyone: if you don't want your pet, drop it off here, don't throw it, "We wish they would come here. If there are animals to be helped we are here to do that," says Robertson.

As for Benji, he's happy and healthy and ready to be adopted. Looking for someone who won't throw him out with the garbage.

All special needs dogs at the Humane Society receive an adoption package with a free lease, bowl and food. Also, your adoption fee will be waived as well as any medical care. The puppies are available on a first come first serve basis.

The Humane Society is working with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Department. When they find those responsible, they could be charged with animal cruelty or neglect.
