Teacher Wendy Portillo Wants Back in the Classroom

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) --  Hearings continue Tuesday for a St. Lucie County teacher accused of asking students to vote on whether a child with disciplinary problems should be voted out of class.

Wendy Portillo is appealing her one-year unpaid suspension she got in November for allegedly holding a class poll to see whether then 5-year-old Alex Barton could stay in class.  Alex was being tested for a type of autism at the time.

Portillo's attorney spoke on her behalf.  Calling the discipline of Alex a mistake, but arguing it should not end her 12-year teaching career.  "Today judge, Wendy Portillo gets to tell her side of the story.  Miss Portillo did something that in retrospect--in retrospect--she should not have done.  And for that she is sorry."

The school district suspended Portillo for one year, and revoked her teaching certificate.  But now a judge will decide if Portillo will be allowed back in the classroom sooner.
