Dancers fill the streets of Miami

By Rachel Leigh email

MIAMI (WFLX) - Dancers by the hundreds lined the streets of downtown Miami waiting their turn to audition for the Fox show 'So You Think You Can Dance'.

Michelle May, auditioning, said, "I'm ready to take critiquing, criticism and hopefully some compliments. I'm in line with almost a thousand dancers, and that's awesome."

Rachel asked, "Are you looking like them as competition though?"

"Yeah, yeah they are," Michelle admitted.

May made the trek from Jacksonville to Miami hoping when she has her few moments in front of the shows' producers, she'll stand out.

Jeff Thacker, co-executive producer, said, "I think that most of the people here will think that's they're talent - most of them are - It's that something that special; that something that stands out."

He and host Cat Deeley owe the show's success to theses dancers reaching for dreams.

Cat Deeley, host, said, "If you prepare to work hard, and you've got the passion and you've got the talent, the American dream is very much alive."

Deeley encourages dancers to show off their personality as early as possible. "So often on the show, we see people who leave it to too late to show their personality. And, naturally, you turn around and go nine weeks in, 'Oh, there you are'. And, quite often, it's too little too late because the American public haven't identify enough with them. And that's what you want to do. You want people to pick up the phone and go, 'I don't know what it is about that person, but I really like them. It's not America's best dancer. It's American's favorite."

Rachel asked, "Do you get attach to them?"

"Of course, it's the worse! Like, whenever we have our results day, which is always live on a Thursday, my make up artist is always like, 'Ok, let's put the waterproof mascara on you today'. And she's like, 'If you cry, and you look like a member of KISS, I'm going to kill you."

Deeley says dancers usually don't get the spotlight, and that's exactly what this show is for, for those like Michelle. "I love dance, and I live for it."

And for all the others who live for the same reason.
