Cold snap keeps Belle Glade farmers on ice

By Lindsay Cohen email

BELLE GLADE, FL (WFLX) - South Florida felt more like Fargo on Thursday as the thermometer dipped into the 20s in Palm Beach County.

The frigid blast comes two weeks after a cold snap that cost south Florida farmers an estimated $50 million dollars in damage.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Chris Hopper, a farm manager in Belle Glade. "The ground is frozen, but some of the crop has water in it."

The moisture and the below-freezing temperatures could be a deadly mix for growers in the Glades. Farmers covered some of the crop with soil on Wednesday, while helicopters were on standby into Thursday morning.

Around 6 am the temperature hovered near 27 degrees in Belle Glade. Some of the corn crop showed signs of damage, while parts of the ground were frozen.

"It's too early [to know about damage,]" Hopper added. "It'll be daylight. We won't know before daylight."
