How fans measure 'Idol' success

Posted by Rachel Leigh email

(FOX) - If first is the worst and second is the best, how come Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and David Cook all seem to be doing so well?

"A good singer from the very beginning, American Idol contestants have made their mark on the music industry giving this year's Idol hopefuls a lot to live up to.

Michael Slezak, Entertainment Weekly, said, "There's no better way to start an Idol fan war on the Internet than to ask who is the most successful Idol because the Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry fans all come up with their own numbers: number of singles sold, numbers of albums sold, overall albums sold."

That figure goes to Kelly Clarkson. Nielsen counts 19 million albums sold.

Break it down to dollars and cents, and Carrie Underwood is the winner - earning $9 million last year.

She has the edge in another area, too. "When it comes to Grammys, score one for Carrie Underwood, 'cuz she's got three to Kelly Clarkson's two."

Not to mention all her country music awards.

But David Cook gets the most love online! "In 2008, the winner of the Google Olympics was David Cook, certainly a lot of fans want to wallpaper their desktop with him."

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson proves finishing first isn't everything, but she's the exception. "Because for every Jennifer Hudson, there's a Jasmine Treus or an Amy Adams, these people who sort of made it onto the top 12 and then disappeared."

Pick your favorites as the judges make their picks for the final 36 next week on Fox 29.

Idol airs Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8 PM.
