Firefighters find body in burning house

By Chuck Weber email

WELLINGTON, FL (WFLX)-Investigators are looking for clues in a deadly house fire near Wellington. It happened on Cypress Lake Drive, off Lake Worth Road, just east of U.S. 441.

Firefighters discovered the body in a bedroom behind the garage, as they were going through the house trying to put out the fire. "The heat was very intensive, even with our gear on," explained Capt. Don Delucia of Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue. "It was very difficult for them to get to the back of the house. When they found the fire and knocked it down, that's when they found the victim."

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says investigators are still working on confirming the identity, but the victim is believed to be in his 20's and a resident of the home.

Firefighters assume the fire had been going some time before a neighbor heard the smoke detector going off next door. Mark Trent went and knocked at the front door of the house, but no one answered. "We could hear a smoke alarm beeping and then I saw smoke," said Trent. "And I called 911."

Tyler Evans was driving on the Turnpike when he saw the smoke and got off the highway to check it out. "It was horrible," said Evans. "At first we thought it was a controlled forest fire or something, but when we saw it was just straight black, we knew something was wrong."

As of early Friday evening, investigators with the Sheriff's Office and Fire-Rescue were still going over the scene.
