Obama set to sign economic recovery bill

Posted by Rachel Leigh email

WASHINGTON, DC (WFLX) - President Obama is set to sign the $787 billion economic recovery bill Tuesday.

The package of tax cuts and new government spending won final congressional approval with only three Republicans in the Senate voting for the measure. No republicans in the House supported the bill.

Democrats say the package will help jump start the economy and create or save million of jobs; however, many republicans say, there's just too much wasteful spending in the package.

As the stimulus bill heads to the President's desk, U.S. Representative Tom Rooney, like all republicans in the U.S. House, voted against the bill. He doesn't think the current measure will do enough to get the economy back on it's feet. "I don't think that you've seen the end of this. I think that we are going to have to come back here at some point and revisit this problem. And, hopefully, at that point, the Republicans will be allowed to participate.

Rooney also says the current package will only boost government spending, and it doesn't do enough to encourage growth for small and medium sized businesses.

He says the only way out of this recession is a combination of tax cuts and less government spending.
