PORT ST. LUCIE (FL) - Before you order, you may have to soon take notice of how many calories are in that meal.

A Tampa lawmaker wants to mandate all restaurant menus list the amount of calories in each item they serve.

Restaurant owners and customers we spoke to are split. Some say, they just don't want to know each hot wing without breading has 90 calories, each slice of pepperoni pizza is 290 calories.

The goal is to make customers more aware of their caloric intake. Lawmakers say high childhood obesity rates, Type 2 Diabetes, and soaring healthcare costs are all good reasons to know exactly how many calories you are eating.

Other states with similar mandates like New York say the caloric count on menus is working to make people eat healthier.

Something waitresses at Big Apple Pizza in East Port Plaza in Port St. Lucie say--no one ever asks about.

"I think it might actually be good to list it, because Diabetes is a big problem right now in this country," said Ruth LeChere, Big Apple Pizza waitress, "I'll be very honest with you, I think when they want their pizza--they want their pizza--I don't think anything prevents them from having it."

"I am treating myself." said customer Lois Forest, who comes for the Pepperoni, extra crispy, and does not want to know how many calories are in the pizza, "I have tried like 30 places here and this is the best pizza. So that is what I care about."

At St. Lucie Grill people come for the wings.

Giant hot naked wings have on average 90 calories each, and giant 1/2 pound burgers-1,600 calories.

Would people still order big if they knew?

Owner Kevin Ballash says yes.

"I don't think it matters too much. I think they realize what they are eating," said Ballash.

Does he think it would sell more salads? "Possibly, maybe do the healthier choice--go with a wrap something like that."
