WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) -- One man is dead and another injured after deputies trade gunfire with two suspects. The men were likely involved in an overnight armed robbery, authorities said.

The incident took place at the Circle K convenience store at the intersection of Westgate and Congress Avenues near West Palm Beach around 1 am, said Deputy Eric Davis of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

"The only thing we can do now is kind of piece together the crime scene and try to find out how many rounds were fired, by whom, and the details about the injuries to the suspects," Davis added.

The initial call was for a suspicious incident at the store, and when deputies arrived, they found two men inside and a third waiting in a car in the parking lot. The man in the car may have concealed his face with a mask or a hood, Davis said.

As authorities arrived at the scene, the two men fled from the store with guns out. Deputies traded shots, hitting one of the men in the face.

Both injured suspects were taken to St. Mary's Medical Center, where one of them died. The other has non-life-threatening injuries. The third man remains in police custody and is being questioned.

"We have our crime scene technicians here, detectives here," Davis added, "[and we are] going to be trying to interview any possible witnesses to this act and try to figure out what exactly happened here."

Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspects or the deputies.
