Delray Beach, FL  (WFLX)

Maybe you're one of those people out there who've watched your  retirement account drying up, or the value of your stocks taking a nosedive.

Well, because of that, some people are trying to sell something they never dreamed they'd ever part with.

Ann Metz of Delray Beach lives with her two dogs.   Ann, a widow,  was laid off from her job with an office supply company last July and has not found another job.

Now, she's decided to sell two mausoleum crypts at a cemetery in Tequesta, all because she's out of work, she's using up her savings, the economy is declining and her 401K is shriveling fast.

"I'm selling because it's going to help and it's going to help me to pay bills and that's the reason," said Metz.

She took out a newspaper classified ad, trying to sell the two crypts for $6000.  She says that's half of what her late husband paid for them three years ago.

In fact, lately the newspaper is full of ads like hers.  We counted nine of these ads in one day.  People who are trying to sell cemetery plots, burial spaces, and crypts in mausoleums, because they're moving out of state and don't need them or because they need the cash.  Some, like Ann, never dreamed they'd have to sell the burial plots or crypts, but say the recession has left them little or no choice.

"It's like everybody is selling their gold now because the price is up to $800 or $900 dollars an ounce so that's the reason everyone is scrapping their jewelry boxes," Metz said.

She says she'll be patient, and hopefully the crypts will sell and she'll have some cash.  "It would be nice. It'd be coming in.  It would be a plus.  It means I'll have, I could really pay certain things off," Metz said.

She says another reason she wants to sell the crypts is because she plans to return to her native France later this year.  But she says if it wasn't for the recession, she wouldn't be trying to sell the crypts now.

Metz says the response to her ad has been slow, but she could sure use the money.
