LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX)-An elderly woman's son came to her rescue, saving her from a vicious attack in their Lake Worth home. The man charged in the case is classified as a sexual offender.

It happened at a home just south of the city's downtown. The intruder apparently used a screw driver to pry open a front window and get inside.

"I heard my mother start screaming," recalled Jim Mampe, who says he literally jumped over the upstairs railing down to the first floor, to get to his mother's bedroom.

"He had a pair of surgical gloves on and he was trying to hold a blanket over her face," Mampe explained. He said his mother's dog was already biting the man-- "a big help, kind of distracted him."

Then Mampe, a former bar bouncer, went to work, tackling the man to the ground. "I had him by the throat," said Mampe. "When he pulled that screw driver, I just had him on the floor, trying to push the screw driver in him, to keep him from getting back up again."

Mampe's mother called 911 and he held the man down until deputies arrived. The Sheriff's Office has charged Carlyle Blackburne with armed burglary and aggravated battery on a elderly person. He was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

The state's Sex Offender Web site lists a Ft. Lauderdale address for Blackburne. He was released from prison two years ago, after serving a 15-year sentence for rape and burglary.

Mampe said his mother was shaken up, but okay physically. She spent the morning resting.

"I don't feel like a hero," said Mampe. "I just felt I did what needed to be done at the time. I feel real good that he's back in jail where he belongs. Not running the streets and trying to do this to somebody else."
