DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX) - An accident involving a police officer has shut down Federal Highway in Delray Beach and sent one person to the hospital.

Authorities say the accident happened around 4:45 a.m. as a police officer was responding to a call of a burglary in progress.

The officer was traveling westbound on SE 10th Street near US-1 with lights and sirens activated when he collided with another driver, said Delray Beach Police Officer Jeffrey T. Messer. The driver was taken to Delray Medical Center, but is alert and conscious and talking with medical crews.

"It was just a big loud bang," said Donnie Malarik, who lives nearby and heard the crash. "There was no screeching of tires or anything. It was just like a big bang. It blew me right out of bed."

The officer's car hit a water valve, and some water spilled onto the street. Authorities shut down US-1 southbound at the intersection of SE 10th Street while they investigate.

The investigation will be turned over to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office due to the severity of the crash, Messer said.
