Good Samaritans Stop to Help Boy Being Attacked

West Palm Beach Police say a homeless man lured a 12 year old boy to a secluded spot, then sexually molested him.

But before he could go further, three Good Samaritans stepped in and stopped him.  The attack happened Sunday March 8 about 3pm in the backyard  of a vacant house on Pinewood Avenue.

The 12 year old was lured back here by a homeless guy who said, come back here with me and we'll smoke some marijuana. But police say the man had something far more sinister in mind.

"I think they're heroes.  Because if they hadn't come, if they didn't come by when they did my son would probably be dead right now," the victim's mother said.

The mother is praising the three men who stopped to help her son. The three guys were walking down some  railroad tracks Sunday afternoon, when they heard a 12 year old boy moaning nearby, and decided to stop and investigate.

As they approached the spot where the moans were coming from, they went up to a chain link fence, and saw a homeless man police later identified as 50 year old  Richard Jones.  Detectives say  Jones had the youngster down on the ground on a mattress and he was on top of the child, sexually molesting him.

"My son said he was screaming and moving and trying to get loose.  He said he was too strong. He couldn't get away from the guy," the mother said.

The three men shouted at Jones, and before he could run away they grabbed him. "They came over and grabbed the guy and held him until police came.  I don't have the words to thank them.   I just don't know what to say because if they didn't come around when they did who knows what would've happened to my baby," she said.

The victim's mother, whom we agreed not to identify to protect her son,  says those three Good Samaritans deserve a lot of credit.

She says she had a chance to thank them personally that day, after they saved her son.

"They gave me a hug and they say I've been living in this neighborhood for a while and they said it's just like he's our little brother. We couldn't let anything happen to him," she explained.

The 12 year old boy is having a hard time.  His mother says he cries in his sleep and says he no longer wants to live in this neighborhood and wants to move somewhere else where he would feel safe.  Jones is behind bars on $250,000 bond.
