RIVIERA BEACH, FL (WFLX)-- The Riviera Beach Police Department will soon offer a new tool to residents and business owners, with the goal of combating robberies, theft and burglaries.

According a report released by the police department in 2012, the city had more than 1,800 cases of a combination of theft related crimes.

Thursday, the department is holding a news conference at 1:30 p.m. in City Hall. Police will announce a partnership with SmartWater CSI.

The Fort Lauderdale-based company uses a liquid that it paints onto personal property that has a forensic code inside which has its owner's personal information inside. If your property is stolen and police get a hold of it, they'll be able to track you down and hopefully track down the thief as well.

The liquid can stay on your property for a minimum of five years, and can only be seen with an ultraviolet black light.

Police hope the use of this technology will deter crime in Riviera Beach. It's been used by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department for a few months, and so far authorities say they've seen a drop in crime.

No word yet if there is a fee to use the service.
