Homeless students in St. Lucie getting help
At last count, there were around 1,800 homeless students in the St. Lucie County School District. For them, back-to-school often means needing help just getting the basics.
That's where Hope's Closet 4 Children comes in.
There, students from pre-K through high school can get shoes, shirts, and hygiene kits in addition to school supplies.
As families register for the new school year, there is a concerted effort in the district to make sure students without a permanent address get what they need.
"Basically, anything you buy for your kid to start school. These kids are starting with nothing, so anything helps them," said school district homeless liaison Kylee Fuhr.
If you have new or gently used clothing, Hope's Closet is always looking for donations.
The weekend of August 17th through the 19th, there will be a "stuff the truck" event at the Hilton Garden Inn in St. Lucie West.
