Women are supposed to get annual mammograms but new research shows women who have painful exams are less likely to go for regular screenings.

Doctors surveyed 625 women age 50 and older who had mammograms. Women who said they had painful mammograms were less likely to be screened again within two years. Overweight women were also less likely to have regular exams. Researchers say these women might have found the breast exam embarrassing.

Experts say technicians who perform mammograms may need more training to make sure patients are as comfortable as possible.
